Neurological Milestones

Robert H. Ackerman
(1935–2018)

Robert H. Ackerman, MD, MPH (1935–2018), Robert Harold Ackerman, MD, MPH, Emeritus Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Neurovascular Laboratory and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, died on December 18 at 83 years of age after a long and productive career in the Departments of Neurology and Radiology. He was a pioneer in stroke imaging and prevention, who devoted his professional life to studying blood flow to the brain for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke and stroke-prone patients.

Vladimir Hachinski
(1941- Present )

Vladimir Hachinski, a distinguished neurologist, has made significant contributions to stroke management and vascular dementia. Hachinski pioneered the establishment of acute stroke units, which is world’s first successful stroke unit at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He developed the Hachinski ischemic scale, a widely used clinical method to distinguish between degenerative dementia and multi-infarct dementia. Hachinski’s research primarily focuses on vascular cognitive impairment, stroke, and brain–heart interactions. His interest in stroke was sparked by a personal experience—his mother’s stroke when he was 12 years old. Dr. Hachinski co-authored a book educating people about recognizing the warning signs of stroke and seeking immediate help to reduce the risk of long-term damage. His advocacy efforts aim to increase awareness and prevent strokes.

Prof. (Dr.) Tudor Jovin
(D.O.B: 24/04/1967)

Dr. Tudor Jovin is a globally renowned expert in the interventional and non-interventional treatment of stroke and cerebrovascular disorders. Being a third-generation physician from his family, he developed a strong interest to improve outcomes in patients with stroke which drew him to interventional neurology. He has been trained under the able guidance of neurosurgeons and is one of the first neurologists to explore the interventional aspect of stroke and cerebrovascular disorders.  Dr. Jovin is highly acclaimed internationally for his research activities. He has served as principal investigator for several landmark international trials including REVASCAT, DAWN, BAOCHE and had leadership roles in trials like SWIFT PRIME and ESCAPE which has culminated into practice changing updates in vascular neurology. He is an experienced member of the executive or steering committees and has worked as principal investigator or co-principal investigator for several multicentered national and international trials. Additionally, he serves as an editorial board member for multiple journals and has more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals or book chapters to his credit. Recently published studies have identified Dr. Jovin as the one of the highest impact authors in the neuro-interventional field.
